Rukhsana.. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Aliah University, Kolkata. She obtained her M.A. and Ph.D. in Geography from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Her administrative roles at Aliah University include serving as the former Head of the Geography Department and Superintendent of Aliah Girls' Hostel. She was awarded seven academic awards and fellowships including the International Young Geographer Award 2009, the AMU-JRF Award 2006, and UGC-RF 2007-2009 award, etc. Dr. Rukhsana completed three Major Research projects sponsored by ICSSR, the Ministry of Education, and New Delhi. She has supervised five scholars leading to award Ph.D degrees, over 75 master's dissertations, and more than 200 undergraduate dissertations. She has published more than 45 papers at national and international levels in reputed journals and 26 chapters in edited books. Dr Rukhsana has published 11 books in Springer and CRC Taylor Francis. Her international experience includes attending the XXV FIG International Congress (2014) in Malaysia and ICGGS (2018) in Bangkok, Thailand. Her professional development includes various training, workshops from different organizations training courses from IIRS Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, ISRO, Department of Space, Govt of India, and Committee on Earth Observation Satellites. Dr. Rukhsana has chaired multiple sessions at conferences and seminars, reviewed over 80 research articles, and presented at more than 29 national and international events. She has also served as an editorial board member and associate editor for various journals including SN Social Science, Springer, Acta Scientific Agriculture, Medicon Agriculture, Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Springer, and Current Agriculture Research Journals. She has also been actively engaged in various professional activities and contributed significantly to the university in administrative capacities.
Her research focused on sustainable agriculture development, urban planning, and environmental issues. Learning and finding innovative solutions to improve crop yield and resilience to uplift the socio-economic of small farmers, as well as exploring the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security.
Teaching is not just about imparting knowledge and learning but about empowering students to apply that knowledge in meaningful ways, fostering a safe and collaborative environment where they can thrive both academically and professionally.
I completed my Ph.D. dissertation on “Food Security and Rural Development in Western Uttar Pradesh, India.” My research interests are centered on agricultural development and planning, food and nutrition security, population dynamics, urban expansion, livelihoods, and rural development challenges.
Five Ph.D. Research has been awarded under my supervision, in the field of Food Security, Socioeconomic transformation in Rural-Urban Fringe, and patterns of domestic Energy Utilization. Presently, I am doing work on Agriculture suitability, environment, Urban Sprawl, Supply of quality of Education, and Resilience for food and nutrition security.
Completed Major Research Project (MRP): completed entitled “Nature and Dimension of Crop Diversification at smallholders in West Bengal” sponsored by ICCSR (Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi-67).
